What happens after surgery can be just as important as what happens in the operating room. When I plan a procedure for an international patient, I do not focus only on the surgical date. I also consider the time you may need away from work, where you will stay, who will support you during the first days, when your follow-up appointments should take place, and when it may be medically appropriate to travel home. A well-organized plastic surgery recovery helps you arrive in Medellín with clearer expectations and a safer, more realistic plan.
The length of your recovery after plastic surgery will depend on the procedure, how extensive it is, whether surgeries are combined, and how your body responds. The number of days I recommend staying in Medellín does not necessarily represent your complete healing time; it is the period needed to monitor the most important early stages of your plastic surgery recovery in Colombia. For this reason, patients considering plastic surgery in Medellin for international patients should not schedule their return flight based only on a general online estimate. Your travel date should be included in the personalized plan I provide before surgery and confirmed according to your postoperative progress.
Your Recovery Starts Before Surgery: What We Need to Check First
A successful recovery does not begin when you leave the operating room. It begins with careful preparation, a complete medical evaluation, and clear instructions before the procedure. This allows me to identify factors that could influence your plastic surgery recovery time and organize each stage before you arrive for surgery.
You Can Complete Your Preoperative Process at Clínica Be Dharma
International patients may complete part of their preoperative process at Clínica Be Dharma, according to the medical indications established for their procedure. The clinic has the technology and resources needed to support this stage, although the tests required will vary from one patient to another.
Your preoperative process may include:
- An in-person medical consultation.
- A review of your medical history, allergies, and current medications.
- The laboratory or diagnostic tests indicated for your surgery.
- Clinical photographs and a final evaluation of the areas to be treated.
- Confirmation that you are medically prepared to undergo the procedure.
Important:
Completing the requested tests does not automatically mean that surgery is approved. I must review the results and confirm that proceedings are appropriate for your health and surgical plan.
I Will Give You a Recovery Plan Based on Your Procedure
Before surgery, I will explain what you need to do and what you should prepare for the first days of your cosmetic surgery recovery. These recommendations are not identical for every patient because breast surgery, facial procedures, liposuction, and body contouring each involve different restrictions.
| What we will plan | Why it matters |
|---|---|
|
1
Medications to continue or temporarily stop
|
Some medications can affect bleeding, anesthesia, or healing. |
|
2
Fasting instructions
|
These instructions must be followed carefully before anesthesia. |
|
3
Compression garments, when indicated
|
They may support swelling control and postoperative care. |
|
4
A responsible adult for the first days
|
You may need help moving, eating, taking medication, or attending appointments. |
|
5
Estimated time away from work
|
This depends on your procedure and the physical demands of your job. |
|
6
Postoperative appointments in Medellín
|
These appointments allow me to monitor your early progress before you travel. |
I also recommend arranging your accommodation, transportation, meals, and personal support before the day of surgery. These practical details can make the first stage of recovery more manageable.
Why Your Medical History Can Change Your Recovery Timeline
A general plastic surgery recovery timeline is useful for planning, but it cannot predict exactly how your body will heal. Your age, general health, previous surgeries, medications, smoking history, type of procedure, and whether multiple surgeries are combined can all influence recovery.
Following the postoperative instructions is equally important. Attending your appointments, taking only prescribed medications, protecting your incisions, walking as recommended, and respecting activity restrictions can help your recovery progress according to plan. For this reason, I provide each patient with individualized instructions rather than relying on a standard recovery schedule.
How Long Should You Stay in Medellín After Plastic Surgery?
One of the first questions international patients ask me is how long to stay after plastic surgery. There is no single answer that applies to everyone. Your recommended time in Medellín will depend on the procedure, the extent of the surgery, your health, the length of your return trip and how your body progresses during the first postoperative days.
The number of days you stay in the city should allow us to complete the most important early controls. It does not mean that your plastic surgery recovery in Medellin will be complete before you return home.
Your Recommended Stay Depends on the Surgery You Choose
Facial surgery, breast surgery and body contouring do not require the same initial recovery period.
After a facial procedure, I may need to monitor swelling, bruising, incisions and changes in sensation. Following breast surgery, the plan may include checking the incisions, breast position and postoperative support garments. Body contouring procedures can involve broader areas, more swelling, greater mobility limitations or surgical drains.
Combined procedures also require additional planning. A mommy makeover, for example, may include breast surgery, liposuction and abdominal surgery during the same operation. Because more than one area is healing, the patient may need additional support and a longer period of observation than someone undergoing an isolated procedure.
Staying in Medellín Allows Us to Monitor Your Early Recovery
Remaining in Medellín gives me the opportunity to examine your progress directly rather than relying only on photographs or messages. During your postoperative appointments, my team and I may:
- Evaluate swelling, bruising and discomfort.
- Inspect incisions and dressings.
- Review drains when they are used.
- Adjust medications or care recommendations.
- Confirm how much activity is appropriate.
- Identify changes that need closer observation.
- Determine whether you can safely continue recovering outside Colombia.
Clear follow-up arrangements are especially important when patients travel for surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends establishing postoperative expectations before surgery, including how follow-up care and possible complications will be managed after the patient returns home.
Do Not Book Your Return Flight Without a Medical Plan
When patients ask how long to stay abroad after plastic surgery, I recommend planning a flexible itinerary rather than choosing the earliest possible flight.
Before advising you about your return trip, I will consider:
| What I need to evaluate | Why it affects your flight |
|---|---|
|
01
Procedure performed
|
A limited facial procedure and an extensive body contouring surgery do not involve the same recovery demands. |
|
02
Postoperative progress
|
Your mobility, inflammation, pain control and wound healing must be evaluated. |
|
03
Possible complications
|
An unexpected finding may require additional observation or treatment. |
|
04
Flight duration
|
A long journey means remaining seated and having limited mobility for several hours. |
|
05
Postoperative controls
|
Important appointments must be completed before departure. |
|
06
Medical authorization
|
Your flight should be based on your individual progress, not only on an online estimate. |
Choosing a flexible ticket can make it easier to adjust your return date if your postoperative evaluation indicates that you should remain in Medellín for additional monitoring.
Recent surgery is a recognized risk factor for blood clots, and journeys lasting more than four hours can add risk because of prolonged immobility. For this reason, flying after plastic surgery should be discussed with the surgeon responsible for your care.
Travel planning tip:
Consider flexible tickets and avoid scheduling important work, social events or connecting flights immediately after returning home.
Flying Home Is Not the Same as Being Fully Recovered
These milestones do not occur at the same time:
Medically ready to travel
Your early evolution has been evaluated, the required controls have been completed, and I consider that you can continue your recovery at home under specific instructions.
Ready for desk-based work
You may be able to work while still experiencing swelling, sensitivity, fatigue or movement restrictions.
Ready to exercise
Physical activity, weightlifting and high-impact exercise generally require a separate medical clearance.
Fully healed or seeing the result
Residual inflammation, scar maturation and tissue settling may continue for weeks or months. Some procedures, including rhinoplasty, can continue changing for up to a year.
Do You Need a Recovery House in Medellín?
A recovery house can provide practical support, but it does not replace medical care.
A recovery house in Medellin may be helpful when you are traveling alone or when your companion cannot assist you throughout the first postoperative days. Depending on the service provided, it may offer support with meals, transportation, personal hygiene, medication schedules and basic daily activities. However, not every patient needs this type of accommodation.
A recovery house may be useful when:
- You are traveling without a family member or companion.
- Your procedure will temporarily limit your mobility.
- You need transportation to postoperative appointments.
- You prefer a setting prepared for early recovery needs.
- You need help with meals or everyday activities.
A recovery house should never:
- Replace an appointment with your plastic surgeon.
- Diagnose or treat a possible complication.
- Modify medications prescribed by your medical team.
- Perform massages without medical authorization.
- Remove drains, dressings or sutures without approval.
- Offer treatments outside your postoperative plan.
Hygiene, responsible supervision and reliable transportation are important when choosing where to stay. I will guide you according to your procedure, the support available from your companion and the assistance you may realistically need during the first days.
How Long Will I Be Out of Work? Plastic Surgery Recovery Time by Procedure
Time away from work is one of the most practical parts of planning your surgery. However, initial downtime should not be confused with complete healing.
You may be able to answer emails, attend virtual meetings or resume light daily activities while your body still has swelling, sensitivity or movement restrictions. The physical demands of your job also matter: returning to computer-based work is different from lifting equipment, standing for several hours or performing repetitive movements.
The following plastic surgery recovery time ranges are general planning references. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons emphasizes that recovery varies according to the procedure, the patient’s health and compliance with postoperative instructions.
| Question international patients often ask | Procedure | Estimated initial recovery or downtime | Longer recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| How long does it take to recover from breast surgery? | Breast augmentation | Approximately 1–2 weeks for light daily activities. | A broader breast augmentation recovery time is commonly around 4–6 weeks, although some restrictions may remain until I provide clearance. |
| How long does it take to recover from a breast lift? | Breast lift or mastopexy | Approximately 1–2 weeks of initial downtime. | Many patients can return to gentle activities or desk work after about one week, but strenuous activity may remain restricted for up to six weeks. Breast shape continues settling over the following months. |
| How long does it take to recover from breast reduction? | Breast reduction | Approximately 2–3 weeks of initial recovery. | Short-term recovery commonly lasts around three weeks, while scar maturation, swelling and internal healing can continue for 3–6 months or longer. |
| How long does it take to recover from liposuction? | Liposuction | Approximately 1–2 weeks depending on the number and size of the areas treated. | Liposuction recovery time varies with the extent of treatment. Compression garments and exercise restrictions may continue for several weeks. |
| How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck? | Tummy tuck or lipoabdominoplasty | Approximately 2–3 weeks of significant initial recovery. | Tummy tuck recovery time depends heavily on whether the surgery is mini, full or extended. More extensive abdominal contouring generally requires a longer recovery, and swelling can persist for months. |
| How long does mommy makeover recovery take? | Mommy makeover | Approximately 2–3 weeks of substantial initial downtime. | Mommy makeover recovery time depends on the procedures combined. A gradual return to broader activities may take 6–8 weeks or longer, particularly when abdominal surgery is included. |
| How long does facelift recovery take? | Facelift or neck lift | Approximately 10–14 days before many patients feel ready for work or social activities. | Facelift recovery time is not limited to visible bruising. Tightness, swelling and changes in sensation may take 2–3 months to settle more fully. |
| How long does rhinoplasty recovery take? | Rhinoplasty | Approximately 1–2 weeks for the most visible initial recovery. | A nasal splint is commonly used for approximately one week. Swelling then improves progressively, but final refinement can take up to a year. |
| How long does blepharoplasty recovery take? | Eyelid surgery | Approximately 10–14 days for bruising and swelling to become less noticeable. | Residual swelling and scar changes can continue improving for several weeks or months. |
Medical note: These are general reference ranges, not a personalized medical clearance. Your exact downtime, recommended stay in Medellín and return-to-flight date will be determined after your evaluation and postoperative follow-up.
Your occupation must also be considered. A patient who works remotely may resume selected responsibilities before someone whose job involves driving, lifting, bending, prolonged standing or physical effort. My recommendation will be based on both your surgery and the activities you need to perform safely.
Medical note:
These are general reference ranges, not a personalized medical clearance. Your exact downtime recommended stay in Medellín, and return-to-flight date will be determined after your evaluation and postoperative follow-up.
What Will the First Days After Surgery Actually Look Like?
The first days of recovery after plastic surgery are usually the most demanding, but they are easier to manage when you know what to expect and have the right support in place. Your experience will depend on the procedure performed, so I will give you specific instructions instead of asking you to follow a generic recovery routine.
The First 24 to 72 Hours Usually Require the Most Support
During the first few days, you may need help getting out of bed, walking safely, preparing meals, attending appointments and following your medication schedule. This is one of the reasons I ask international patients to arrange responsible adult or appropriate postoperative assistance before surgery.
Depending on the procedure, the initial recovery period may include swelling, bruising, fatigue, tightness, changes in sensation and manageable discomfort. These symptoms should evolve within the expected pattern explained during your consultation. The acute recovery phase commonly involves the first few postoperative days, and following your surgeon’s instructions is essential during this period.
Your first days may include:
| Recovery stage | What you may need |
|---|---|
|
01
First 24 hours
|
Rest, assistance when moving, prescribed medication and observation. |
|
02
24 to 72 hours
|
Short walks, incision care, hydration, appropriate meals and symptom monitoring. |
|
03
Following days
|
Postoperative appointments and gradual adjustments to daily activity. |
This is a general overview. Your sleeping position, mobility, wound care, compression garments and appointment schedule will be adapted to your surgery.
This is only a general overview. Some procedures require drains, specific sleeping positions or more restricted movement, while others allow greater independence sooner.
Your Aftercare Instructions Will Be Specific for Your Surgery
Your plastic surgery aftercare plan may include:
- How to clean and protect your incisions.
- Which prescribed medications to take and when.
- The position in which you should sleep.
- How frequently should you take short walks.
- Whether you need a compression garment.
- How to monitor drains when they are used.
- Which movements and activities should you avoid.
- The dates of your postoperative appointments.
Compression garments, bandages and temporary drains may be indicated after procedures such as liposuction or abdominal contouring, but they are not required in the same way for every patient. The ASPS recommends following the surgeon’s individual instructions for wound care, medication, warning signs and follow-up appointments.
Important:
Do not add massages, medications, supplements, wound treatments or aesthetic therapies to your recovery plan unless I have authorized them.
Follow-Up Appointments Help Us Decide What Comes Next
Postoperative appointments are not a formality. They allow me to examine your incisions, swelling, mobility, pain control and overall progress before making decisions about the next stage of your recovery.
During these controls, I may determine when you can:
- Shower normally.
- Increase your walking or daily activity.
- Adjust or stop using a compression garment.
- Remove or manage drains and dressings.
- Begin selected postoperative therapies.
- Return to work.
- Travel home.
- Continue your care with a medical professional in your country.
This direct evaluation is especially important for international patients. A photograph or video call may support later follow-up, but it does not always replace an in-person examination during the early post-operative care after plastic surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plastic Surgery Recovery in Medellín
1. How long should I stay in Medellín after plastic surgery?
The recommended stay depends on the procedure, whether surgeries are combined and how your body progresses during the first postoperative days. A facial procedure, breast surgery and extensive body contouring do not require the same monitoring period. I will recommend enough time to complete the essential in-person appointments, evaluate your incisions and confirm that you can continue your plastic surgery recovery outside Colombia. Your time in Medellín is not the same as your complete healing time; swelling, scar maturation and tissue changes may continue after you return home. ASPS recommends planning follow-up care before traveling for surgery.
2. Can I fly one week after plastic surgery?
Not every patient will be ready to fly after one week. The decision depends on the surgery performed, your mobility, wound healing, pain control, medical history, flight duration and postoperative evaluation. Recent surgery and prolonged sitting can increase the risk of blood clots, particularly during journeys lasting more than four hours. For this reason, flying after plastic surgery should be included in your medical plan rather than decided only from a general timeline found online. I recommend flexible travel arrangements until your progress can be assessed.
3. How much time should I take off work?
Your time away from work depends on both your procedure and your occupation. Someone who works remotely or at a desk may return to selected responsibilities sooner than a patient whose job involves lifting, driving, prolonged standing or repetitive movement. Returning to work does not mean that healing is complete; you may still have swelling, fatigue, sensitivity or activity restrictions. I will estimate your plastic surgery recovery time before surgery and adjust the recommendation according to your postoperative progress. Recovery varies according to the type and complexity of the procedure.
4. Will I need someone to stay with me after surgery?
Yes, you should arrange a responsible adult or suitable postoperative support for the initial recovery period. During the first days, you may need assistance getting out of bed, preparing meals, following medication schedules, attending appointments or completing basic activities. The amount of help required varies according to the procedure and your mobility. Before surgery, I will explain whether your companion should remain with you continuously and for approximately how long.
5. Is a recovery house necessary after plastic surgery in Medellín?
Not every patient needs a recovery house in Medellin. It may be useful when you are traveling alone, having limited support or expecting temporary mobility restrictions. A suitable recovery house may help with meals, transportation and everyday activities, but it must not replace medical appointments or make independent decisions about medications, massages, drains or wound care. I will help you assess whether this option is appropriate based on your procedure, companion and practical needs.
6. Can I complete my preoperative tests after arriving in Medellín?
Part of your preoperative process may be coordinated at Clínica Be Dharma, located in Torre Médica Oviedo, according to the requirements of your surgery. This may include an in-person consultation, review of your medical history and medications, clinical photographs and the laboratory or diagnostic tests indicated for your case. Not every patient needs the same examinations. I must review the results and confirm that proceeding with surgery is appropriate before the operation can take place.
7. Are postoperative massages always required?
No. Postoperative massages are not automatically necessary after every plastic surgery procedure. Their indication, timing and technique depend on the operation, the tissues treated and your clinical progress. A massage performed too early or without appropriate authorization may interfere with incisions, increase discomfort or be unsuitable for your procedure. Do not allow a recovery house, therapist or other provider to add massages or treatments to your plastic surgery aftercare unless I have reviewed and approved them.
8. When can I exercise after plastic surgery?
Exercise should be resumed progressively and only after medical clearance. Short, gentle walks may be recommended early to support mobility, but strenuous exercise, weightlifting, running and movements that place tension on the operated area usually require more time. The schedule varies significantly between facial, breast and body contouring procedures. ASPS advises patients to ask their surgeon specifically when normal activity and exercise can be resumed and to follow individualized postoperative instructions.
9. What happens to my follow-up care after I return home?
Before you leave Medellín, I will explain how to continue your care, which restrictions remain in place and when virtual follow-up may be appropriate. You should keep copies of relevant medical records and know whom to contact if a concern develops. Depending on your surgery and progress, I may also recommend arranging access to a healthcare professional in your home country. ASPS emphasizes establishing a plan for routine follow-up and possible complications before a patient travels home.
10. Which symptoms require immediate medical attention?
Contact my team promptly if you develop unexpectedly increasing pain, fever, significant bleeding, sudden or asymmetrical swelling, increasing redness, discharge or concerning changes around an incision. Difficulty breathing, chest pain or an unusual heartbeat require immediate emergency medical attention rather than waiting for a routine appointment or an online response. ASPS identifies these symptoms as reasons to seek urgent care, and patients should not delay evaluation when a postoperative complication is suspected.
